McPike Mansion: Located in Alton,IL built in 1869 by
architect Lucas Pfeiffenberger for Henry McPike and his
family who lived there until 1936. Since 1936 the home changed
hands many times serving once as Brown’s Business College.
Later purchased by Paul Laichinger who lived there, and rented
out the remaining rooms then sat vacant for many decades
finally to be bought by Sharyn and George Luedke who have
begun an extensive restoration process. The home is to be
haunted by Henry, Paul, a renter named Sara, and at least one
child believed to have drowned in the tub.
Villisca Axe Murder House: Located in Villisca, IA the home was the site of a brutal
mass murder back in 1912. J.B. Moore, his wife Sarah, their four children, and two children
from another family that were staying the night at the home. All eight were murdered in
their sleep with an axe that had been found on the property. No suspect was ever put
to trial for the murder, due to lack of evidence, and remains a source of controversy today.
1886 Crescent Hotel: Located in Eureka Springs, AR it was built as a seasonal hotel, and
remained that until 1908 when it also became a women’s college. In 1937 the property
was bought by Norman Baker who used it as a cancer hospital claiming to have the cure
for cancer (of course did not), and even conducted experiments on patients many people
of course died. In 1940 Dr. Baker was convicted of mail fraud, and the hotel sat vacant
until reopened as a hotel in 1946. Many spirits ranging from patients, students, workers,
and visitors with many active areas.
The Myrtles Plantation: Located in Saint Francisville, LA built in 1796 by General
David Bradford on the site of a Native American burial site. The many stories come from
the many different occupants of the home with sightings of children, soldiers, former
owner William Winter who was shot and died on the thirteenth step of the stairs, and
a former slave named Cloe who is reported to have mistakenly poisoned most of the
family she worked for.
Waverly Hills: Located in Louisville, KY it began in 1910 as a tuberculosis treatment
center, and began to fill rapidly. In 1924 it was expanded to the current five story concrete
structure that remains today. The hospital shut down in 1961, and was soon reopened as
a geriatric hospital, and continued until 1981 amid allegations of abuse of patients. No
exact number of deaths is known, but rest assured it is at least in the thousands, and
appears to still be very active even though it has been vacant for years.
Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery: Located in Midlothian, IL the first burial was reported to
have been William B. Nobles in 1838, with the last Laura M. McGhee in 1965. Later in
1989 Robert E Shields was cremated, and buried in his families plot. The cemetery in the
past was used as a park for picnics, and fishing and swimming the pond next to the
cemetery. Later the pond which is an old quarry, is rumored to have been used by
Chicago gangster as a “dumping” area. The cemetery has been the victim of vandals,
desecration, and even satanic rituals.
Willard Library: Located in Evansville, IN and built in 1885 by Willard Carpenter housed
in a Victorian Gothic building designed by James and Merritt Reid was listed in the National
Register of Historic Places in 1972. The reports of hauntings started in 1937 when a
janitor saw a gray veiled woman in the basement when he was alone in the library. The gray
woman has been sighted many times, and is believed to be the spirit of Louise Carpenter,
daughter of Willard, who was upset she did not get the library after her Willard’s death.
