The building that today houses the Webster Groves Theatre Guild, was first used in 1907. That year the 4th ward improvement association used it for city offices, and meetings. Once the city moved out the building housed the Mulroy School of Music. As the named implied the school gave music and dance lessons as well as holding recitals for its students, and other groups in the city.
When the school of music closed the building was used as kindergarten, and offered gym classes for a short time. Later becoming known as the “Suburban Hall” was used by the community for dances, parties, community events, polling place, Boy Scout meeting hall, and was rented on Sunday’s by local churches. In 1922 two brothers bought the building, and turned it into a printing shop for almost 30 years.
The Guild, which was formed in 1927, purchased the building in 1951. It has used the building for both offices, as well as the location for their productions.
